Finding The Story in Science

  • Christianne’s Lyceum 4433 West 10th Avenue Vancouver, BC, V6R 2H8 Canada (map)

Exploring the complexities of science can sometimes feel intimidating to those of us who don’t possess a background in it. There are buzzwords, acronyms, and enough formulas to make your head spin. WORD Vancouver and Christianne’s Lyceum are teaming up once more for an evening with three authors who seriously know their science.

Rachel Poliquin will start by showcasing “all things ordinary and disorderly in the natural world”. Her latest book, The Museum of Odd Body Leftovers is the perfect amalgamation of her mutli-disciplinary background in visual arts, cultural history and natural history.

We’ll then pass things over to Claire Eamer, who will share two works, Extremely Gross Animals and What a Waste! Where Does Garbage Go?. Whether we’re discussing the not-so-pleasant adaptations of animals or the decomposition of our leftovers; there’s a certain magic in merging science and creativity.

We’ll draw the evening to a close with Emily Seo’s heartwarming deep dive into The Science of Boys, completing the triptych we’ll create iconic shrink art pins to adorn your summer hats, September school bags, or future science fair project.

Whether you come in loungewear, pajamas or black tie, this event is open to all members of the public. Light refreshments will be provided.

About The Readers

Rachel Poliquin is an award-winning non-fiction author who writes about all things orderly and disorderly in nature. She particularly likes celebrating unexpected animal heroes — the lumpy, lowly, and quietly extraordinary. She is the author of ten books including The Museum of Odd Body Leftovers, The Polite Predator Series, and The Strangest Thing in the Sea. She lives in Vancouver with her husband and three children.

Claire Eamer is an award-winning author of children's nonfiction books, mainly about science and history. She also writes articles for magazines and newspapers, fiction, and even a picture book. She’s pretty sure that the creatures in her picture book -- Underneath the Sidewalk, about monsters living beneath our feet – are not real. She’s more sure that the strange creatures in her latest book, Extremely Gross Animals: Stinky, Slimy and Strange Animal Adaptations, are real. Real or unreal, she loves them all! Claire lives and writes on Gabriola Island in the traditional and unceded territory of the Snuneymuxw First Nation.

Emily Seo holds a PhD in chemistry from the University of British Columbia. She worked as an Associate Editor for two science journals and ran a multidisciplinary laboratory before experimenting with creative writing. The Science of Boys is her debut novel followed by two other children’s books, Our World: Japan and The Perfect Sushi.
