A home for writers. A destination for readers. EVENT is an award-winning, internationally recognized literary magazine that inspires and nurtures writers, showcasing the best contemporary writing from Canada and abroad three times a year.
Every issue presents a compelling selection of fiction, poetry, non-fiction, and reviews that inspires, delights and challenges with a diversity of voices and literary styles.
Over the decades EVENT has published many distinguished writers, including George Bowering, Esi Edugyan, Jack Hodgins, Annabel Lyon, Pablo Neruda, Alden Nowlan, Diane Schoemperlen, Carol Shields and Timothy Taylor, both before and after they gained national or international recognition, and continues to support gifted emerging writers.
This year, EVENT magazine celebrates its 50th anniversary by releasing 50 Years of EVENT Magazine: Collected Notes on Writing, an anthology of more than 70 personal essays with insights into the joys and struggles of the writer’s life and process, written by a mix of notable writers from across Canada, including Jane Urquhart, Nino Ricci, David Bergen, André Alexis, Madeleine Thien, Camilla Gibb, Eden Robinson, Jen Sookfong Lee, Gail Anderson-Dargatz, Joy Kogawa, Souvankham Thammavongsa and Joshua Whitehead. The launch at WORD Vancouver on Sunday, September 26 from 10:30-11:30 a.m., hosted by J.J. Lee, will feature readings and a dynamic conversation between Doretta Lau, Maria Reva and Kevin Spenst.
EVENT invites writers from all backgrounds and experience levels to submit to its Non-Fiction Contest. We welcome creative non-fiction in all its forms, including personal essay, memoir, autobiography and travel writing. We’re seeking real-life experiences told as artful, riveting narratives with distinct voices. $3,000 in cash prizes, plus publication. October 15 deadline. 5,000 word limit.
EVENT also runs a popular Reading Service for Writers, providing writers with in-depth commentary and recommendations, and editing of prose and poetry manuscripts.
