Diversity Statement Word Vancouver
Over the past five years Word Vancouver has sought to create a welcoming, barrier-free, culturally respectful and inclusive environment for everyone to engage in the literary arts. The way we do that is constantly evolving as we learn more and as technology advances.
We are committed to preventing and/or stopping any psychological, sexual or discriminatory harassment. This policy applies to all organizational personnel at all levels, including our contracted service providers. We also moderate our live and virtual events with this in mind.
Word Vancouver welcomes everyone to our events. We are committed to giving space to lift up the voices who have been under-represented so they can safely share their gifts and experience inclusion and belonging within the literary community.
We take performer safety seriously so we encourage masking in indoor spaces and are mindful of allergies for food and beverages provided in our green rooms. We hope to be a breath of fresh air in the literary space and ask that you refrain from using heavily scented products as a courtesy to fellow patrons and performers. We follow all local health guidelines and welcome service animals in our spaces.
Accessibility is an essential element of our community and a crucial criteria in the selection of festival venues. We prioritize accessibility for those using mobility aids. Anyone with mobility challenges, physical disabilities or chronic pain is welcome to courtesy seating to ensure they can more comfortably enjoy the festivities.
Live Streamed hybrid events are captioned for those who are better able to enjoy programming with this accessible option and we are pleased to offer hearing accessible options when asked to provide this assistance.
Our values prioritize safety, diversity, inclusivity/connection/collaboration/ acceptance/creativity/ accessibility and integrity as essential components of our community.
That’s also why our festival is free, because we don’t want cost to be a barrier to experiencing literary arts. Come as you are and let’s experience the written and spoken word. Should you have additional accommodation needs please don’t hesitate to reach out in advance of the festival.
