Short-listed for the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize (2024) and the William Saroyan International Prize for Writing (2024) , Heiltsuk author Brandon Reid's debut novel Beautiful Beautiful "manages to capture hypnotic traditional storytelling in written form." In this event, Reid will share an excerpt from his novel and discuss its themes of masculinity, cultural tradition, and coming of age.

About The Moderator

Michelle Cyca

Michelle is a journalist and essayist living on the unceded homelands of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations in what is recently called Vancouver. She is an editor with The Narwhal and a contributing writer to The Walrus. Her writing can often be found in Maclean's, Chatelaine, The Tyee and The Globe & Mail. Previously, she was the editor-in-chief and co-publisher of SAD Mag. Her feature story, The Curious Case of Gina Adams, received a National Magazine Award in 2023 for investigative journalism, and was published in April 2024 as a limited-edition hardcover. She's a member of the Muskeg Lake Cree Nation in Treaty 6, Saskatchewan.

About The Reader

Brandon Reid

Brandon Reid holds a B.Ed. from UBC with a specialization in Indigenous education, and a journalism diploma from Langara College. His work has been published by All Lit Up, the Richmond Review and The Province. He is a member of the Heiltsuk First Nation, with a mix of Indigenous and English ancestry. He resides in Richmond, BC, where he works as a TTOC. In his spare time, he enjoys cooking, playing music and listening to comedy podcasts. His debut novel, Beautiful Beautiful, was published with Nightwood Editions in fall 2023.
